How Does a Turbocharger Work?
Turbos are made up of two main sections -- a turbine, which holds a turbine wheel and has a housing, and a compressor, which contains a compressor wheel and its own housing. The turbine housing allows exhaust gas into the turbine wheel, turning it; the gas then exits the housing through an exhaust outlet.
The compressor works opposite to the turbine; its wheel, attached via a forged steel shaft, gets turned by the turbine at high velocity, draws air in, and compresses it. The housing pressurizes that air and diffuses it into a low-velocity stream. That compressed air's then pushed into the engine for combustion.
