What Are Mercedes-Benz Coolant Hoses?

Coolant hoses are the flexible lines that connect the components of your Mercedes-Benz cooling system. Most are made from heat-resistant reinforced rubber and molded into model-specific shapes. Common types include upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses that feed the heater core, bypass hoses, expansion tank hoses, and coolant lines serving turbochargers on turbocharged engines. Many newer Mercedes-Benz models use quick-connect couplings with retaining clips in place of traditional hose clamps.

How Coolant Hoses Keep Coolant Moving

Coolant hoses carry hot, pressurized coolant between the engine, thermostat housing, radiator, expansion tank, and heater core. Their flexibility allows them to absorb engine movement and vibration without cracking. Heater hoses also supply the warm coolant your heating system uses to warm the cabin.

Over time, heat cycles can harden, soften, or swell rubber, and plastic connectors can become brittle. When inspecting hoses, look for cracks, bulges, a spongy feel, coolant residue at connections, or a coolant level that keeps dropping. Genuine hoses are molded to the original routing, which helps prevent kinks and rubbing against nearby parts. When replacing a hose, replacing its clips or O-rings at the same time is good practice. Where Coolant Hoses Are Located in a Mercedes-Benz

Coolant hoses run throughout the engine bay. The upper radiator hose typically connects the thermostat housing to the top of the radiator, while the lower hose returns coolant from the radiator toward the water pump. Heater hoses route back to the firewall to reach the heater core, and expansion tank hoses connect near the coolant reservoir.
