Steering Systems 101

What One Does

A steering system, in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle like the 190 E or otherwise, works with a suspension via the steering wheel. What one does is, in your case, give your sedan's wheels freedom of movement while helping to keep them stable.

How One Works

How one works generally is straightforward. Turn the steering wheel, and it converts that turn into rotary motion that travels down a steering shaft and moves the wheels back and forth, from left to right.

The Parts of One

Everyday steering systems have many parts -- most, a gear box, a center link, a Pitman arm, an idler arm, and tie rods -- and the most common type is rack-and-pinion, complete with an assembly that works with bellows boots and tie rods to convert rotation into linear motion. Put simply, with one of these, turns get better and more accurate. Most cars these days also have power steering, which makes turns even easier and more precise, not to mention four-wheel steering, a system that can turn all wheels at higher speeds for exceptional stability and minimal fishtailing.

Mercedes-Benz 190 E Steering Systems

As 190 E was a compact car in the classic Mercedes-Benz Series 201 line of sedans, though, one that came out in 1982 and was available until 1993, its steering system differs in kind in the details. That is, the car had an early multilink rear suspension with recirculating-ball steering, and power steering, initially optional, came standard from late 1985 on.

The Signs of a Bad One

Over time, though, most steering systems can develop "play," namely, uncontrolled motion. This indicates misalignment and can result in unpredictable handling and much faster tire wear. When this starts to happen, you'll see foam or dirt in the power steering fluid, you'll hear strange grinding or squealing noises, your car will start to pull sideways abnormally, and the steering wheel will start to feel loose, slip, vibrate, or just plain get harder to turn.

Why Buy Steering Parts from Us?

OEM quality. Mercedes-Benz manufactures them. So, what you get will be up to the same high standards that you've come to expect. Aftermarket 190 E steering parts, however, may not always be the same quality, and they may not work as well as original ones.

Compatibility assurance. Any steering part you get will fit and work with your Mercedes-Benz 190 E. Steering parts from aftermarket brands, on the other hand, can end up not-so-great fits.

Warranty support. No steering system part that Mercedes-Benz makes for 190 E should have any defects in materials and workmanship. On the off-chance that you notice one that does, it'll get taken care of. You're unlikely to get this peace of mind from anything bought on the aftermarket.
