Can You Tune a Mercedes-Benz A 35 AMG®?

A 35 AMG® is one high-performance luxury sedan, a standout in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and one with serious upgrade prospects. Although you can tune the engine computer for performance (and pretty easily, with a specialized advanced scan tool, through the car's OBD-II (Onboard Diagnostics II) port), you shouldn't do that, under any circumstances.

Luckily, there are easier (and better -- and safer) ways to get the bump in power, higher efficiency, and more agile handling you want.

Here's a couple; consider them before your next project.

Upgrade to a Supercharger

The 2021 A 35 AMG®, for instance, has a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, but supercharging can allow it to pull in a lot more air for combustion. That's key to the richer air-and-fuel mix required for the few extra horses.

Replace the Stock Induction System

Put in a cold air intake. This means relocating the factory engine air filter to a spot outside the engine compartment -- above a wheel well or near a fender, for instance. These are places it can pull in cooler, denser air -- the higher-quality stuff, better for combustion.

Of course, you can get cleaner air, too, not to mention more of it than usual -- just replace the stock engine filter with a performance air filter. Also, update the exhaust system: it'll relieve backpressure (indirectly improve airflow) by opening up the exhaust pipe.
