What are Some Common Problems with the Mercedes-Benz 600 SEL?

Your 600 SEL. A mainstay of both the 140 series and the S-Class. Among Mercedes-Benz cars, a standout -- capable for the everyday, luxurious, and a pleasure to drive. Expect nothing less from the model that, after the 1992 and 1993 model years, became the celebrated long-wheelbase S 600.

Want to keep the car pristine? Stay ahead of regular maintenance, surely, but also, take care of any of the issues the line commonly has, if you run into them. Here's a few to look out for, and what to do about them.

Failed Sensors

Engine in your 600 SEL running rough? Fuel economy getting worse? There's a good chance you've got a bad mass airflow (MAF) sensor; this was a known issue for models with 85,000 miles or more on the odometer. The sensor fails, and the engine starts getting bad info from the engine control module (ECM) about air volume, causing said problems; you'll have to replace it.

Faulty Suspensions

If your 600 SEL has a suspension with automatic level control, and you've clocked 88,000 miles or so, give or take, the back of it can start to ride rough -- this, owing to one or both dampening actuators failing. You'll have to replace whichever the problem is, but to maintain ride quality, it's best to replace both at the same time.

Bad Radiators

If coolant's leaking, then, most likely, some of the plastic parts of the radiator in your 600 SEL have degraded. This is commonest in models with more than 100,000 miles clocked. There's no fixing them; you'll need a complete radiator replacement.
