Best Practices for Safe Towing in Your Mercedes-Benz

1. Hitch Up Properly

There's a right way to hook up a trailer to, say, a Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, and a wrong one. Follow procedure to the letter. Check your connections; that includes the coupler and wiring. Make sure your safety chains are not only secure but also crossed under the trailer tongue. Above all, check your owner's manual or other trailer documentation for specifics on processes.

2. Adapt the Rules of the Road

Put simply, a lot of this is just plain safe driving. For one, allow plenty of stopping distance between your SUV and other vehicles, and avoid suddenly speeding up, braking, or maneuvering. Pay attention; don't tailgate, don't drive too fast, and so on. Mind your crosswinds driving around large trucks, and be careful downhill; it can cause trailer sway. Change lanes just as mindfully, allowing for the time and distance you need to do it safely. Anticipate stopping, and do it gradually if you can. Just as importantly, don't get that GLC 300 you love stuck somewhere you'll have trouble pulling out of.

3. Equip Right the First Time -- Choose OEM Parts

Know your crossover's weight capacity, and outfit accordingly. Get the right-size hitch and other parts, and opt for any safety features you should, like pins and locks. Above all, get genuine Mercedes-Benz. They won't sacrifice quality, and they'll be guaranteed to fit and work right.
