How to Install Mercedes-Benz Step Rails (Running Boards) DIY

You're in luck; they're pretty easy to put on. Here's how to do it.

  1. Gather what you'll need. That means safety glasses, a flashlight, and a wax pencil, plus wrench, ratchet, and socket sets, an impact driver, a drill, drill bits, and a flat screwdriver or punch. You'll also need wheel chocks and, most likely, a little touch-up paint.
  2. Use the wax pencil to mark a. the mounting holes under your vehicle, and b. where any holes need to be drilled, for each of the rails' brackets.
  3. Use the drill and the proper-size drill bit to make any holes necessary.
  4. Put the fasteners in place, align the brackets, and finger-tighten the fasteners (just not completely).
  5. Align the mount holes on one of the rails with the brackets. Then, place the fasteners and finger-tighten them.
  6. Finish tightening all the fasteners using either the right-size ratchet and wrench or the impact driver. (Be sure not to overtighten them.) Watch your alignment as you go; adjust it as needed.
  7. Repeat these steps for the rest of the rails.

If you end up needing to drill holes for fasteners, you'll want to touch up the metal around them afterward. Be sure to consult your owner's manual for specific directions on everything, as they can vary among Mercedes-Benz models. As always, if you're not sure how to install, a Mercedes-Benz service center will be glad to help.
