All About Mercedes-Benz Shift Knobs

If your shift knob has faded, worn out, or broken, there's no fixing it, unfortunately; you'll have to replace it. The average cost isn't too bad, but it can vary widely, by everything from type to the Mercedes-Benz model you drive.

More basic options -- plastic or metal, for instance -- can go for as little as $10. A custom job, on the other hand -- say, a carbon-fiber shift knob for a Mercedes-Benz S 500 -- can run several hundred dollars. From there, price depends on perks -- whether the knob's leather- or vinyl-wrapped, for example, or a different shape or size, or even weighted.

Whichever you prefer, how to replace it is straightforward; here's how to do it.

  1. Put on the emergency brake and put the car in neutral.
  2. Take the old knob off; you can either unscrew it manually, counterclockwise, or use a wrench.
  3. Screw the new knob on directly (or fit it using any adapter required).

Just note your old shift knob's thread diameter before buying -- that way, you'll be able to find a new knob that fits more easily. Consult your owner's manual for more specific directions, but if you're not sure what to do, a Mercedes-Benz dealer can help.
