Why is the HVAC in My Mercedes-Benz Not Working Right?
Most likely, because of low or leaking coolant, a failed heater core, a defective AC compressor, or a bad AC condenser. You'll know one from the other by some key symptoms.
How Can I Tell if My Coolant's Low or Leaking?
Start your engine, setting the air conditioner and fans to max/high and listening for the compressor clutch to click. If the system runs too fast, the coolant's probably low. If your Mercedes-Benz isn't due for air conditioning service anytime soon, a leak's likely.
What are the Signs of Heater Core Failure?
The heater not blowing warm, the interior being steamy or smoky, the smell of coolant in the car, and the engine overheating. The core's hoses are the likely problem; they're probably leaking. If you need help with this or any other repairs, get in touch with a Mercedes-Benz service center.
How Can I Diagnose an AC Compressor Defect?
Look, listen, and feel. If the air conditioning sounds funny, if the cabin's warmer than usual, and if the AC clutch is stuck, it's probable. You'll know a bad clutch from connecting a voltmeter and getting no reading. Other causes of compressor trouble include low refrigerant pressure, a faulty cycling switch, and a blown fuse.
How Can I Tell if the AC Condenser in My Mercedes-Benz is Bad?
You'll know it from the HVAC warning light being lit, from frost starting to build up, from the AC button flashing, from the system having discharge pressure issues, and from the vents not blowing cold. If no air's coming through them at all, though, the blower motor's probably gone out. Other reasons for condenser issues include a failed cooling fan and a clogged cabin air filter.
